Academic Coaching

Three Ways Academic Coaching is Better than Math Tutoring

Some people believe an Academic Coach and a Tutor are the same thing.  Nope.

That’s like saying a fruit salad is the same as a pineapple.  They’re both food.  Both consist of fruit.  Both are satisfying (though not like Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey).  But one offers grapes, strawberries, pears and pineapples.

Math Tutoring teaches students to improve their performance in one subject.  Academic Coaching teaches students to improve their entire academic performance; it nurtures a student to succeed in all aspects of life.

Let’s say your daughter Claire is flunking Common Core Math.  What happens if you sign her up with an Academic Coach (like those at Miracle Math Coaching.  I know, shameless plug)?

1)      An Academic Coach  will complete a comprehensive assessment of Claire.  Coaches will learn her strengths, weaknesses, learning style, classroom situation, shoe size and favorite singing star.  (Ok, shoe size is a joke.  But Beyonce will help.)

2)      An Academic Coach will be strategic about what happens in a session with Claire.  Only half of the session will be devoted to Math.  The Coach will spend the rest of the time helping increase her academic performance overall.  That includes showing her how to study better, take notes, stay focused and, most importantly, how to never give up.

3)      An Academic Coach will help Claire learn the trick to setting goals.  Rather than just helping her with goals in Math, a coach will teach the art of achieving goals in life.  It’s similar to the adage, “If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day.  If you teach him how to fish, he eats forever.”  Academic Coaching will teach Claire to bait a hook and reel in salmon.

In other words, Academic Coaching teaches students how to be successful in their studies, but also how to maintain success throughout their academic careers and personal endeavors.

Don’t get me wrong.  Tutors are great.  They’ll help a student gain mastery in a particular topic or class subject.  But Academic Coaches give students the tools to help them do well in school and also succeed in life.
