Three Ways to Protect your Child from Zombies
May is Zombie Awareness Month, and that got me to thinking about what I’d do if blood-thirsty creatures started taking over the world. Of course, my top three goals would be 1) to save my family, 2) to save my family and, 3) to save my family. My husband, Diondre, and I would lay down our lives to protect our daughters.
But what should our girls do if we aren’t around? What advice can I give them now to keep them as safe as possible during an apocalypse?
Here’s three pieces of advice I’d give them:
Always be aware of your surroundings. This is the age of texting, tweeting, facebooking and wearing earphones. It’s easy for older kids to get so distracted by their gadgets that killer zombies (or plain, old human predators) can easily sneak up on them. They must stay alert.
Scream and run if a stranger grabs you. This one is obvious, but it’s important to drill into your child’s psyche. Zombies – and other strangers – are looking for easy prey. A screaming kid wrestling to get free has a better chance of escaping.
Don’t panic. As with adults, fear can rob children of their ability to think clearly. How horrible would it be knowing that your child was paralyzed with fear. To help prevent that, teach your children how to calm themselves when they’re not in immediate danger.
Practice deep breathing exercises with them or show them how to mediate (you can Google it). This will help whether they’re freaking out about a zombie invasion, a piano recital or a Math quiz.
What would you tell your child if zombies were roaming the earth?
