Benefiting From Parent Teacher Conferences – Part 1
There are several unique ways to benefit from parent teacher conferences. According to research, positive communication between a parent and a child’s teacher is known to improve the academic-based performance of that child. It is imperative to become deeply involved in your child’s education. Parent teacher conferences are wonderful opportunities for you to open up the lines of communication with your child’s teacher, to learn about the academic progression of your child, as well as their social advancement. A conference should be a starting point of ensuring that your child’s progress is on track. In this two-part series, you will learn how to reap the most benefits from a parent teacher conference.
What Your Child’s Teacher Wants
Most parents are under the impression that a conference is all about obtaining a teacher’s input. While this is true – to some degree – it is important to understand that your child’s teacher actually wants YOUR input. Your kid’s teacher wants to learn who your child is, and who you are. They want to know what you feel your child’s strengths and weaknesses are and what is going on at home. It is quite likely that you have a lot of questions for the teacher; however, you should understand that they also have a lot of questions for you! It is important that you approach the conference knowing this.
Prior to the Conference
As a parent, it is imperative that you start preparing prior to the parent teacher conference. You should start preparations well in advance of the meeting. At the beginning of each school year, you should create a file system. It should include homework, graded papers, and any notes about questions you have or topics that you would like to address. This way, when it comes time for the conference, you will have all of this information handy. Next, you should keep the lines of communication open with your child. You should always inquire as to what topics they are covering at school, what they are struggling with, and learn about what they like and do not like. In addition to this, you may want to let your child know that a parent teacher conference is coming up. You should then ask if there is anything that they would like you to cover.
The ultimate goal for any parent and any teacher is to ensure a child’s success. This includes academic success and social success. The conference that occurs between you and your child’s teacher should cover all aspects of a child and their progression in order to put them on track to where they need to be. In this installment, you have learned what your child’s teacher wants and how to properly prepare for the parent teacher conference.
